And So It Begins

After the better part of eleven years, we've actually started planning for a wedding. Well, by "we" I mean "Jo is figuring stuff and asking my opinion occasionally". Same difference. We're not rushing it though - looking at October 2007 (ie, 16 months from now) so we can save up and pay for bits as we go, instead of doing what most people seem to do and bankrupt themselves.

She's chosen her dress - burgandy and cream - and we're debating on some rings. Not having a church ceremony (duh), probably having the "Wedding Breakfast" in one of our favorite resturants, assuming they cater for that kind of thing. Evening looks set to be a hall/community centre hired out with a buffet so we can feed the unwashed masses (Friends and Family). We also know other bits here and there - our cake is planned (and was done many years ago), kids (including me) outfit is roughly planned (that is, we have an idea) and colour schemes and such like...

The fun part will be the ACTUAL arrangements. We've often worried about our wedding as it seems no one in the families get on for whatever reasons, but we've decided "to hell with it" and will just lump everyone together. If they can't handle it/don't like it, they can see the door clear enough to use it. Guest lists are fun though - the wedding is likely to be a small affair - family mostly with a smattering of close friends, while the evening... Ugh, I dread to think!

Our problem is that we don't have many friends "in the flesh" as it were. Most of our friends are scattered across the globe, from the length and bredth of England, to the States, Middle East, Australia... So that should be a logistical nightmare. For others, that is ;)

Then there is the issue of hall limits and restrictions. If we put out open invites to our friends home and aboad, then pay for a massive hall but no one shows, it'll look empty. By the same token, if we get a tiny hall and half the known world turn up (and the Americans).... Well...

I am sure as the months tick by things will fall into place - like I say, it's still a waaaay off, and we're only working on the basics at present, but we've decided that living in sin is sooo 90's.

My biggest "concern" is the whole "Best Man" thing. I've had friends come and go since childhood, I've had friends enter my life within the last few years, and I've got the odd person that knows everything about me - heck, one of the people I am considering is a girlie! Again, we've got the whole "But I don't want to upset Person X if I just Person Y", and KNOW it's up to me/my decision - but that doesn't make it any easier! The shortlist is three people, so maybe I should start a competition between them, find out which is the better friend! hehe Of course, if they all fail, I might just hang myself!

And in closing - my stomach knots at the thought of standing up and giving a speech. Maybe I should get hammered the night before so I can doze through most of the wedding... Sure that'd go down well.

Are you having a stag night?

What's the cake made with? Fruit? Sponge? Chocolate?

If you're not opposed to random Americans showing up, we'd love to make the trip. I've amassed an amazing amount of frequent flyer miles and would love a good excuse to use them.

If you're not up for strangers from the internet invading your wedding, that would certainly be understandable.

In any event, congrats again!

hehe I am sure that there will be random people at the wedding anyway - depending on the size of the place we can get for the evening, we shall see what's what.

Plus you'd get to see the wonderful sights of Basildon and visit all the places of interest. Like the bus station!
