Use Your Noggin

Being that it's Fathers Day (go me), I figured I would make you have a think for a change, instead of just plodding through my musings. I got this by email this morning, and while the answer is readily available out there on the web, I figured you might like to try figure it out for yourself. So...

There is a common English word that is nine letters long. Each time you remove a letter from it, it still remains an English word — from nine letters right down to a single letter. What is the original word, and what are the words that it becomes after removing one letter at a time?
I'm sure the smarty pants of you will have no problems. I, however, am slightly less dense than rotten vegetables, and cheated right away. If it helps, there are actually a few words you can use, not just one. You can cheat if you want, but that's up to you.
