Can't Say I'm Sorry
No wonder there are people in the world that look on to Britain and consider "our" food to be vile, gross and blergh. Just saw this on Sky News, and can only say "It's about time"
Pigs' Cheeks Off The MenuI mean, people obviously eat them, and no doubt there are people that think they are ambrosia (not the rice pudding), but come on... Don't get me wrong, I would consider trying all of the above, but to call them "classic" dishes? Squirrel Casserole? Sauce made with blood? Pig face?
Classic British dishes are facing extinction because the younger generation has not even heard of them.
Bath chaps, jugged hare and brawn are three potential casualties of changing tastes in food.
A "generation gap" in culinary knowledge is also to blame for the demise of former British favourites, according to UKTV Food.
Its researchers compared the desirability levels of several dishes amongst under 25s with the over-60s.
The survey of more than 2,000 people asked the two age groups to rate their awareness of different meals.
Bath chaps - pigs' cheeks in breadcrumbs - is the dish considered most under threat.
Jugged hare, where the hare meat is served in a sauce of its blood mixed with port, was second highest on the danger list.
The two dishes were recognised by just 1% and 1.6% respectively of the young people questioned.
By contrast, 40% of the over-60s knew about Bath chaps and 33% in that age group were aware of jugged hare.
Brawn - or jellied pig's head - was the third least-recognised dish amongst the young respondents.
Squirrel casserole is fourth on the danger list with a recognition rate of 4% amongst the under 25s, compared to 18% of the over 60s.
Bedfordshire clanger - scrag end of mutton or bacon served with kidneys and fruit - came in fifth place.
UKTV Food channel head Paul Moreton said: "While pigs' cheeks and squirrel casserole are clearly not to everyone's tastes, they are a powerful link to a bygone culinary era."
I'll stick with my Toad in the Hole. hehe

My Mum adores pig cheek and complains constantly abut not being able to buy it. I say, "Thank Christ for that!"
You should just buy her some chicken breast - i imagine that's what pig cheeks look like!
Ewww. Doesn't sound very good to me.
Why can't Liver be in there, who the hell like's that stuff? yuk! Now Toad in the hole now your talking mmmm.
How about welsh rarebit?? now that's good grub!!
While not a fan, I can eat Liver depending on how it's done - my mum makes it with a crispy herby cover, but it's once in a bluemoon if ever.
I'd have toad in the hole a lot - were it cooler anyway - can't be arsed to cook!
